Settle Down
05:22
|
|||
It's a lonely stretch of highway
when you drive redemption home.
There's a feeling there that goes nowhere
so you pull to the side of the road.
And you hear the sagebrush whisper
as it all comes back again
When you're busted down on this sacred ground
just this side of innocence.
You wonder if she's still around
Still living in this desert town
She had always said that you'd come back around.
To settle down....again.
Unsettled by the fact that you'd let her go
Settled in like darkness on your soul
Settle down.
There's a tree-lined street in your old hometown
where memories are good.
And you came of age when you carved her name
in that big old cottonwood.
And, you see that it's still standing
Standing true and tall
And a gentle breeze blows thru the trees
Like you'd never left at all.
You wonder what she's doing now
Still working at the Lost and Found?
She had always said you'd end up back in town.
To settle down...again
Set out on the road to find yourself
Now here you are again, despite yourself.
It's time to settle up and swallow your pride
It was you, not her, who scared you off that time
She said she knew you better than you know.
And, now the dust has settled
You're all alone
Standing at the doorstep to her home
To settle down.
Way, way down.

This Must Be the Place
04:10
|

This is the place I always dreamed that I would live
but never noticed as I passed it every day.
Some kind of Shangri La, a glimpse I caught in passing
Like a smile
from a passing stranger's face.
Do you know where roses grow?
There was this girl I always dreamed about
but did without the benefits of what her love could bring.
A gentle princess to dismiss my inhibitions
and convince me that I'm worthy to be king.
Sometimes, love stares me in the face.
Looks like this must be the place.
This is the world my father told me I'd inherit
and to do with it whatever that I wish.
It took awhile to reconcile it's always changing
and it's harder to resolve than to resist.
Pushed myself much farther than I'd ever thought I'd go
as I pushed my own ambitions
past the place where roses grow.
Sometimes, life puts us in our place.
Looks like this must be the place.
Sometimes, love stares me in the face.
Looks like this must be the place.
Some kind of Shangri La.

Barricades of Dawn

Darker side
Shades my nature
Call it foolish pride
A man's not meant to cry
When things get tough.
I think we both have had enough
Taking everything for granted
Now here we stand, apart
Clutching at our weary hearts
What's done is done
So, we run...
we can run till the night meets the sun.
The world seems so much colder
When you're older
and change is a bitter word.
Darkness carries over
I think it's almost over
And we can start again.

On the outside I'm a melody tinker, a wistful poet, a framer of moments, a quixotic nomad, a sucker for love, a plunderer
for justice, a friend to those who’ll listen-an impudent ghost to those that won’t.
On the inside I’m a recovering cynic, a light house keeper under siege, a champion of lost causes, and by birthright-my own worst critic. Still, always happiest occupying creative space.
